Chemical Peel Benefits, Precautions and Advice

Benefits:

Chemical peels can be used on the face and body to promote a youthful appearance, maintain healthy skin and prevent chronic skin issues.

It is important to remember that a chemical peel is the willful application of an acid to produce a controlled injury to the skin. By intentionally causing “damage”, you prompt the body into: 1) amping up the production of collagen and elastin which form the support system for the epidermis and 2) causing the outermost layers of the epidermis to slough off, revealing newer, fresher and healthier skin.

~ Helps prevent skin cancers.

~ Improves skin tone, texture and overall appearance.

~ Brightens dull, blotchy, uneven complexion.

~ Dissolves blackheads, kills bacteria and controls acne.

~ Fades discoloration due to sun damage, hormones and scarring.

Precautions:

You should not use a chemical peel if:

~ You are currently taking Accutane or have done so in the last 12 months.

~ You are undergoing cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and/or radiation.

~ You have open wounds or lesions, sunburn, rash, broken or inflamed skin or recent surgery.

~ You have unrealistic expectations: chemical peels are designed to be a progressive treatment and can require multiple applications to achieve a goal.

Advice:

~ Normal reactions to chemical peels: inflammation, redness, sensitivity, darkening of the skin in treated area especially in areas that will peel deeply(the skin returns to normal color after peeling), scabbing, crusting, oozing and flaking.

~ Check with your doctor or pharmacist before receiving a peel if you are taking any medications.

~ The skin can be rosy in areas after deeper peels and spot treatments, this is a normal part of the healing process and will resolve in time. If this is bothersome I advise using a foundation until skin tone normalizes.

~ NO sun exposure for at least 4 days after peel and always use sun protection thereafter. I strongly suggest only using mineral block as opposed to chemical sunblock which needs to be reapplied every 45 minutes. Using a hat and clothing to block the sun is necessary for the first four days and suggested thereafter.

~ Do not shave or use chemical depilatory or exfoliating products 2 days prior to peel and until shedding has stopped.

~ Never scratch, pick at or pull shedding skin. Saturate skin in the shower and gently rub with fingers to debride.

~ Do NOT use any products that contain exfoliating ingredients such as retinols or acids while peeling.

~ For best results and quicker healing time use: Unpetroleum Jelly, Therapeutic Moisturizer, Geranium Toner, Hyaluronic+ C Serum and Stem Cell Lip Line Renewal.

~ Raw/sensitive spots/areas: apply Un-Petroleum Jelly and cover with a band-aid or piece of gauze.

~ You can wear makeup during a chemical peel.

~ Only water is required for cleansing, however, if a cleanser is desired it should be creamy/oil based.

~ Apply Un-Petroleum Jelly to occlude the skin when receiving a deep peel or spot treatment and to raw spots or areas where the skin is prone to crack; usually the corners of the lips and eyes.

~ Daily and weekly exfoliation products such as our Microderm Scrub, Glycolic Peel and Spot Treatment, Retinol Moisturizers, Glycolic Cleansers and Stem Cell Lip Line Renewal are recommended for post peel care to maintain your peel results.
